  • Cult Life

Amanda Catarzi's childhood was steeped in the oppressive environment of a cult that dictated every aspect of her life. She describes how the cult's teachings instilled fear and submission, particularly among women, using religious stories to enforce compliance 1. Amanda recalls being labeled as a promiscuous woman for minor transgressions, which set the stage for future abuse 1. This environment normalized abusive relationships, making it difficult for her to recognize and escape them later in life 2.

The part that made it the scariest was the way that the women were trained to be insanely submissive. Like you could never say no to any man.

    ---

Her move to California, initially an act of rebellion, led her into another cycle of abuse, highlighting the pervasive impact of her upbringing.

    Gender Roles

The cult's rigid gender roles further entrenched Amanda in a cycle of abuse. Women were expected to be submissive and serve men, a belief system that Amanda internalized deeply 3. This indoctrination left her ill-equipped to set boundaries or recognize healthy relationships 4.

My understanding of men in my role in interactions with men was to serve them. That's it. I was taught that no matter what if my husband wanted sex, I say yes, and I didn't even know what sex was.

    ---

Her early experiences with older men evaluating her for marriage further distorted her perception of relationships, making her vulnerable to traffickers who exploited these ingrained beliefs.
