Initial Escape

Yeonmi Park recounts the dire circumstances that led her to escape North Korea. Starvation and the sight of lights across the Chinese border fueled her desperation. She explains, "I was hungry. And then if you see North Korea at night from the satellite picture, it is like the darkest place in the world" 1. China Struggles

Once in China, Yeonmi faced new horrors, including human trafficking. She describes being sold and exploited, a fate common among North Korean women due to China's one-child policy 3. Reaching Safety

Yeonmi eventually crossed the Gobi Desert to reach Mongolia, a perilous journey with no guarantees of survival. She recounts, "You don't know if you're going straight or backwards... because nothing tells you" 4. Upon reaching Mongolia, she faced the threat of being sent back but ultimately found refuge.
