Episode Highlights
First Night
Adam Gamal's first night in New York City was far from the American dream he envisioned. Struggling with language barriers and navigating the city, he faced immediate challenges, including a rainy night and a confusing subway system 1. A helpful police officer and a junkie eventually assisted him, but the experience was a stark contrast to his expectations 2.
I was like, dude, what happened to the limos? What happened to Julia Roberts? I mean, what happened to all the pretty women that I'm gonna see in the streets and the limos and, you know, like, well dressed men? And there was none of that, by the way, none of that.
---
This marked the beginning of his journey in America, filled with cultural shocks and unexpected realities.

Adapting
Adjusting to life in the U.S. was a grind for Adam, who took on various odd jobs and faced numerous hardships. From sleeping on the floor to working in factories and gas stations, he did whatever it took to survive and improve his situation 3. Networking played a crucial role in his adaptation, as he connected with people from diverse backgrounds who shared his aspirations 4.
So what a lot of people don't realize was like, you know, the majority of immigrants, legal immigrants, so I don't want people to get all bent out of shape. But immigrants, when they come, they come in because they are seeking a better life, and they'll do whatever it takes.
---
These experiences shaped his resilience and determination to make America his home.

Dream
For Adam, the American Dream represented the freedom to dream and pursue opportunities unavailable in Egypt. He contrasted this with the restrictive environment under the Muslim Brotherhood, where upward mobility was limited to those within the organization 5. In the U.S., he found the right to dream and the possibility to achieve his goals through hard work and perseverance 6.
I came to the US to give me the right to dream and what a lot of people don't take this for granted. The US actually gives you the right to dream that you can actually walk down the street and you say, you know, you see this house? One day I'm gonna, I'm gonna buy this house.
---
This belief in the American Dream fueled his journey and motivated him to overcome the challenges he faced.
